EK Podcast #2: N8 Van Dyke Interview

by

November 19, 2015

EK_MH_PD_N8
For the Empty Kingdom podcast's second episode, we spent a pleasant hour with an old favorite of ours -the great Nate Van Dyke, legendary artist/illustrator, and the tallest, most pleasant beer drinking man we've ever met. We first interviewed him for the never released art documentary that was our first project before even the website existed.

Cinematastica by Tomer Hanuka

Tomer Hanuka was previously featured here. He is an Illustrator and a comics artist. He also apparently has a brother who is also a talented illustrator. I don't know who the older and it seems they get along but I wonder if they ever got in art wars growing up. "No you're better!" "No YOU'RE BETTER!!!!" "RRAAAHHHH!!!!" (start painting on each other's faces and giggling with brotherly love.) -His movie posters are pretty cool. You had me at Badlands and sealed the deal with Kubrick.

Bruno Walpoth: Oh So Woody

by

Bruno Walpoth_Nostalgia-destate_l
Hello boys and girls, it's been AGES! I missed you all. I disappeared into a carrot cake. Meet Bruno Walpoth, a sculptor from Italy. The melancholy expressions of his figures fit nicely in their settings, but I personally would like to see him make a sculpture out of a giant carrot. And then I'd eat it. Yums.

ALT J // Something Good

by

ALT J Music Video by BREWER
A new ALT J music video by one of our jolly good 'ole boys, BREWER. None of God's creatures were harmed during the making of, but if one ever was, you'd be sure to know we'd eat every last bit of it and use its bones as art. So does that make it okay?

Alexander Korzer-Robinson

alexander korzer robinson_
Alexander Korzer-Robinson creates amazing book sculptures that take the traditional collage experience into another realm and deconstructs nostalgia while simultaneously creating nostalgia through introspection by using only the images found in each book. Does that make sense? He explains it better in his statement.

EK Interview: The Rainbow Never Ends – A Mi Ju Interview

by

October 27, 2012

ek_mijugaia_mh
Mi Ju (previously featured September 2012 and April 2010) does not do drugs, but she is definitely high off of life, which is a very blessed thing to be. Her Gaia show is wrapping up in NY and if you got the time you should check it out. And remember, art is smack, but crack is wack, yo. There's a reason why there's a million stoner movies and not one single funny crack comedy.

Alfonoso Batalla

alfonso_batalla_fishtank
Introducing the quiet commentary of Alfonso Batalla. There's a game we play here at EK, it's called "What time is my post supposed to be scheduled?" Everyone has their own timeslots, but when people forget theirs it becomes a vicious game of musical chairs. Actually it's a game only I play with my favorite editor-in-chief in the world, and it's because I'm the only retarded writer here.

Oh My Heavens, It’s Mi Ju!

by

September 27, 2012

02-2
2010 Top 100 artist Mi Ju (previously featured April 2010) is young and incredibly talented. Her large works of intricate, colorful art is deep and full of themes and symbols that suck you in. Take it from me, viewing her work in person is a treat, because you just get transported into a whole new world. Her style is incredibly original and personal, and while we don't know where it all comes from, we do know one thing, they did not come from drugs.

Asians are kind of weird. Let's not get tied up in some sort of debate about the political correctness of that statement, it's just a fact. But they still make good art. Meet Chie Aoki. Miyazaki, much?

Nikki Rosato, Cut Maps

by

June 21, 2012

nikki rosato_TwoBoston_Feature-Image
Our physical bodies are beautiful structures full of detail, and they hold the stories that haunt and mold our lives. The lines on a road map are beautifully similar to the lines that cover the surface of the human body... -Nikki Rosato In my work involving maps, as I remove the landmasses from the silhouetted individuals I am further removing the figure’s identity, and what remains is a delicate skin-like structure. Through this process, specific individuals become ambiguous and hauntingly ghost-like, similar to the memories they represent.

Oh, and I do also know his paintings are a real treat in person! He is currently solo-showing at the prolific 111 Minna gallery, so check it out if you're in the area! You won't be disappointed.
