Swiss Army Man: Review

by

July 2, 2016

maxresdefault
Swiss Army Man, the debut feature film of the talented duo the Daniels (Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan) won the Sundance directing award and after viewing it, it is obvious why. The film is incredibly original, funny, charming, and heartfelt in so many ways. If you enjoy(ed) the trailer then you will be delighted and pleased to find out the film is what you might expect and more.. you will laugh, you might cry, and throughout the entire film you will be on the edge of your seat wondering what wonderfully gross and hilarious twists and turns are in store for you next.

EK SHOP: MICHAEL REEDY

by

March 7, 2016

Original-LetsGo_1024x1024
Michael Reedy Michael Reedy is one of our favorite artists here at EK. His level of detail and seamless blending of mediums within each piece is really amazing to behold in person. We were fortunate to have Michael as part of one of our past shows, and he definitely commanded his space with the quality of his art. His work, just as many artists, deserve a really close look in person, you won't be disappointed. We have some amazing prints and originals and really affordable so please, enjoy. I just literally bought myself a print for "Ms. Robinson," because I can't afford an original yet. YET!!!

Lucien Shapiro is a dear dear friend of Empty Kingdom, one of the oldest and coolest. He is a badass sculptor and a very original, thoughtful human. In this episode we dive deep into his career. We interviewed him in the lobby of the Kabuki Hotel in SF. He is doing a nationwide tour of a fear collecting ritual that is explained in the podcast. I highly suggest checking it out, I missed the first one in SF but I'll be sure to be at the next one, because well I got some things to get off my back. I bet you do too.

MERKUR PRESENTS: Ayça Şen

by

February 24, 2016

_8106814kucuk
Presented by Merkur Gallery -Şen, who sees the coincidences, come ups; shortly, the flow of life in its own rhythm as the flow of nature in its own rhythm, she considers ‘’Where to look from” a visual extension of personal confrontation and personal change. In this sense, when all conceptual explanations can be perceived as an intervention to the whole of personal life, the ‘’contradictions’’ that she handles come into play and by wriggling from vertical media, they get into horizontal media, which can make concessions too.

Galleria Gum Presents: Camila Valdez

by

February 13, 2016

"Miss Popcorn XL" Giant hyper realistic popcorn bucket with legs wearing red stockings.
Galleria Gum, a fantastic gallery founded by Andrea Pasin, in the heart of the Wynwood Arts District (Florida) represents some talented artists doing great work. Here we highlight Camila Valdez, a young and emerging argentinian artist who creates hyper-realistic leggy dessert sculptures. When constructing her anthropomorphic sweet treats, Camila selects materials which highlight the bold colors and exaggerated shapes of classic desserts. Utilizing such materials as fiberglass and epoxy resins, which are later hand-painted in order to attain a surreal glow, proof is given that her art is a matter of taste.

For the Empty Kingdom podcast's second episode, we spent a pleasant hour with an old favorite of ours -the great Nate Van Dyke, legendary artist/illustrator, and the tallest, most pleasant beer drinking man we've ever met. We first interviewed him for the never released art documentary that was our first project before even the website existed.

Tomer Hanuka was previously featured here. He is an Illustrator and a comics artist. He also apparently has a brother who is also a talented illustrator. I don't know who the older and it seems they get along but I wonder if they ever got in art wars growing up. "No you're better!" "No YOU'RE BETTER!!!!" "RRAAAHHHH!!!!" (start painting on each other's faces and giggling with brotherly love.) -His movie posters are pretty cool. You had me at Badlands and sealed the deal with Kubrick.

Bruno Walpoth: Oh So Woody

Bruno Walpoth_Nostalgia-destate_l
Hello boys and girls, it's been AGES! I missed you all. I disappeared into a carrot cake. Meet Bruno Walpoth, a sculptor from Italy. The melancholy expressions of his figures fit nicely in their settings, but I personally would like to see him make a sculpture out of a giant carrot. And then I'd eat it. Yums.

ALT J Music Video by BREWER
A new ALT J music video by one of our jolly good 'ole boys, BREWER. None of God's creatures were harmed during the making of, but if one ever was, you'd be sure to know we'd eat every last bit of it and use its bones as art. So does that make it okay?

Alexander Korzer-Robinson creates amazing book sculptures that take the traditional collage experience into another realm and deconstructs nostalgia while simultaneously creating nostalgia through introspection by using only the images found in each book. Does that make sense? He explains it better in his statement.

EK Interview: The Rainbow Never Ends – A Mi Ju Interview

by

October 27, 2012

ek_mijugaia_mh
Mi Ju (previously featured September 2012 and April 2010) does not do drugs, but she is definitely high off of life, which is a very blessed thing to be. Her Gaia show is wrapping up in NY and if you got the time you should check it out. And remember, art is smack, but crack is wack, yo. There's a reason why there's a million stoner movies and not one single funny crack comedy.

Alfonoso Batalla

Introducing the quiet commentary of Alfonso Batalla. There's a game we play here at EK, it's called "What time is my post supposed to be scheduled?" Everyone has their own timeslots, but when people forget theirs it becomes a vicious game of musical chairs. Actually it's a game only I play with my favorite editor-in-chief in the world, and it's because I'm the only retarded writer here.

Oh My Heavens, It’s Mi Ju!

2010 Top 100 artist Mi Ju (previously featured April 2010) is young and incredibly talented. Her large works of intricate, colorful art is deep and full of themes and symbols that suck you in. Take it from me, viewing her work in person is a treat, because you just get transported into a whole new world. Her style is incredibly original and personal, and while we don't know where it all comes from, we do know one thing, they did not come from drugs.
