Lalla Essaydi Revisit

by

April 2, 2014

Lalla Essaydi, featured back in 2012, is a Moroccan-born artist who delves into Islamic calligraphy to give a voice, and an intricate veil, to her subjects. The tension between the richness and the confinement in her photographs hints at the complexities of Arab female identity, and the voyeuristic Western tendencies thereof. Her two latest series, Bullet and Harem Revisited are potent, luminous, and absolutely breathtaking.

titian_web12
As any of you lovely London souls will know, Summer 2012 was not only about the olympics but also an incredible feat of artistic exhibitionism. Although we can't bring the ballet itself to your doorstep, below is one gorgeous facet - the film of the re-imagined Diana myth. Chilling, and sublime.
