Getting philosophical with the nature of skin in J'aurai Ta Peau, a short documented, directed, and partially animated by the JTP Team (consisting of Victoria Jardine, Vivien Ebran, Alexis Koch, and Nicolas Trotignon). With very cool sound design work done by Benoit Duvette.

The Invisible War

1_e_Kirby-Dick,-Amy-Ziering-_The-Invisible-War
Director Kirby Dick pulls back the shocking veil covering the tragic toll of women soldiers being raped in their military service. The Invisible War is no doubt a stirring examination that exposes a nightmarish problem that has gone unchecked for far too long. It is yet another permanent scar in our human history that leaves me bewildered and speechless.

1_e_Peter-Strickland-_Berberian-Sound-Studio
Director Peter Strickland immerses our sense of sound into a pool of horrific delight in his latest feature entitled Berberian Sound Studio. A creeping scare flick that unflinchingly entwines its narrative and head protagonist within its own aural web-work. Got to love a film that tampers with its own cinematic tools!

Offender

1_e_Ron-Scalpello-_Offender
Director Ron Scalpello smudges the line between justice and vengeance in his latest feature length Offender. The film centers on a Young Offenders Institute, and it's newest recruit readying a dangerous plan of revenge against a gang of notorious inmates. I can always count on the cinematic elegance of Britain's rebellious violence and emotionally-overwhelming depictions of angst. A much appreciated find by the blind architect.

Starry, Starry Night

While authoring here, I at times  mostly  act like an offensive twit and a jackarse, it is true that I am just a hopeless romantic at heart. It's films like Starry Starry Night that just remind me of that. This film looks like a wonderful mix of imagination, loneliness, and a sweetness to each other. "Do you still remember? That summer.  That most splendid. Most lonely of starry nights." Stick a fork in me, Tom Lin, because that was well done.

Chet Baker: Let’s Get Lost

by

August 4, 2012

chet-baker-12 copy
We've featured philosophers, intellectuals, artists, and here and there, we'd feature musicians. Throughout early civilizations, the frontiers passionately orchestrated classical music, and eventually, the next generation branched out to jazz. From there, there was rock, hip-hop, and IDM. There was Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Nina Simone, and the Wu-Tang Clan. In the blink of time, there were several artists that paved the roots in silence. In a manner of sincerity, I'd like to share Chet Baker. A documentary, 'Let's Get Lost'.

Kim Ki-Duk roars back into the cinema with his 18th feature entitled Pieta // 피에타. An irksome loan shark is reunited with a strange woman claiming to be his long lost mother. From that point on, a strange, controversially violent / sexual relationship ensnares them both into a calamitous drama. Glad to see the South Korean auteur back in form.

1_e_Nisha-Pahuja-_The-World-Before-Her
Director Nisha Pahuja's documentary The World Before Her examines the ever-growing cultural / societal rift between the women of modern day India. Internationally adopted meanings of glamour battle traditional Hindu ideologies through the telling of personal journeys in Pahuja's film. The hardboiled testimonials, opinions, and emotive sacrifices make it hard to say that anyone arrives at some sort of compromise / consensus. Agree to disagree? I think not... More explanatory synopsis can be read after the jump.

Thursday Till Sunday // De Jueves a Domingo

by

1_e_Dominga-Sotomayor-Castillo-_Thursday-Till-Sunday-(De-Jueves-a-Domingo)
A family road trip to the northern regions of Chile abstractly portrays a marriage on the brink of divorce. Small quarrels, negative gestures, nods, gazes, and a scarce amount of conversations are just some of the details we observe through the eyes of the couple's daughter. Dominga Sotomayor Castillo's Thursday Till Sunday // De Jueves a Domingo tackles a very personal subject with intellectual poise, taking a hard to explain topic and rendering its effects into the framework of film. Check out the film details (via IFFR 2012), screenshots, and video embed after the jump.

Director Wei Te-Sheng recaptures a historical battle between the Japanese army and the indigenous Seediq tribes of Taiwan. The violent and heroic confrontation was called the Wushe Incident. Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale digs into these past tales of tragedy and incalculable risk to present a politically relevant and smartly executed war story without being muddled with bangs, booms, and whistles (no worries, there's still plenty of that). Official summary details and lengthy historical background info after the jump.

Environmental Terrorism (Eco-Terrorism), a somewhat extreme and definitively fuzzy juxtaposition of words that tries to find rational compromise throughout the compelling documentary If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front. Directors Marshall Curry and Sam Cullman distribute / divide the facts and opinions from each opposing side, ironically revealing shared truths and miscalculated assumptions. 1_e_Dallas-Hallam,-Patrick-Horvath-_Entrance
There was one particular element that struck me when I first watched the trailer for Dallas Hallam's & Patrick Horvath's semi-found-footage-esque suspense piece Entrance. It was the realism. I could easily picture myself in any of the film's various city scenes, and the fact that this is an outside-of-the-box type of horror flick, the idea certainly gives me goosebumps.
