Logan Hicks is a stencil artist from Baltimore, he currently lives in LA.  Although Hicks did screen printing while living in Baltimore, he sold all his equipment so he could move to LA in the late 90s.  After selling his screen printing equipment Hicks turned to stenciling as he saw it as the closest approximation to the style he was so accustomed to.  He never turned back.

graffiti 101: john CRASH matos

by

March 11, 2010

John Matos, known by the alias "CRASH", was born in the Bronx.  Like both Donidi and Zephyr, Crash began spray painting on walls and subway trains in the early 1970s.  Most of Crash's early work has been lost, a casualty of the New York MTA's vigorous condemnation and war on graffiti art.  Crash is credited as the first artist to incorporate 3D representation into his lettering.

John Fekner is a multi media artist from New York.  Fekner began with his graffiti career with the words: Itchycoo Park, spray painted on park in Jackson Heights, New York.  As he grew Fekner continued to focus on stencils that were fairly simple but were socially and politically potent.  His stencils were a running commentary on the social and environmental issues Fekner perceived around him.

Richard Hambleton is a pioneer of graffiti and spray painting.  He started in New York City and became most famous for his Shadowman and Image Mass Murder.  The Shadowman was a series of large human-like figures painted, mostly in black, on walls, in doorways, down alleys.  For his Image Mass Murder Hambleton drew chalk lines on the ground resembling the chalk outlines police use for crime scenes, Hambleton then threw red paint on the chalk outlines to simulate blood.

Mark Gmehling is an artist from Dortmund, Germany. Gmehling's artistic focuses include illustration, animation, and graffiti arts...my personal favorite. When I came across Gmehling's characters at quick glance, I originally thought that they were actual toys, but instead, they're 3D character designs of his. Very fun stuff. http://behance.net/markgmehling http://markgmehling.weebly.com
