“Kim Jong Il, the late “Dear Leader” of North Korea, was an avid Hollywood film nut who kept 20,000 movies in a massive cinema complex under his Pyongyang palace . And in 1987 he published a Manifesto on how to make the Perfect Film. AIM HIGH IN CREATION! resurrects, with straight-faced reverence, Our Dear Leader’s unique and unexplored cinematic vision. We meet the people he inspired (the South Korean Actress he kidnapped in 1978 to refine his directing skills, the Sushi-Chef who smuggled him Rambo DVDs on the sly, ” the guy who wore the monster suit in Godzilla rip-off Pulgasari); we discover the films he loved (James Bond and Friday the 13th to everything Elizabeth Taylor ever made); and we uncover the 11,870 romcoms, noir thrillers, military shoot-em-ups and martial arts extravaganzas he produced as “Creative Commander” since 1964 Having gained unprecedented access into North Korea, acclaimed director, Anna Broinowski, gathers a fearless troupe of Western actors dedicated to testing Kim’s “pure Socialist alternative” to Hollywood, and faithfully creates a short film according to the Manifesto – complete with elaborate group dance, repetitive use of song and rigorous acting workshops written in Our Dear Leader’s didactic, unadorned style.
