art blog - Ayad Alkadhi - empty kingdom

Originally hailing from Baghdad, Iraq, but currently based out of New York City, New York, Ayad Alkadhi creates mixed media pieces that focuses on cultural and political topics of Iraq and the Middle East. Alkadhi incorporates Arabic calligraphy, as well as Arabic newspaper clippings applied to the canvas in his work, exploring the intersection of Eastern and Western culture and politics.

Alkadhi left Iraq after the first Gulf War in search for a better future, and he continues to critique the 2003 US invasion of Iraq in his work.

“Being a war survivor dominates one’s psyche. It is a layer that is not easily shed…I use sarcasm, anger, sex, and humor to express the topics in question.”
