Currently based out of Paris, France, Gwenn Dubourthoumieu is a photographer who was pulled into the world of photography after working for NGOs in Africa, and he’s been a regular recipient of numerous awards for his body of work. Recently, Dubourthoumieu made the short list for the Sony World Photography Awards for his “Turkana Warriors” series, as well as receiving the Jury’s Special Prize Award at 8th Days Japan International Photojournalism Festival for “The Child-witches of Kinshasa” series.
I just want to say this now, and make it very clear…Dubourthoumieu is an exceptionally intelligent individual and talented photographer. All of his series on his website are accompanied with a very thorough and clear artist statement, giving full cultural context and background history behind his images. Without his words, some of the images in this post can definitely be taking out of context, so I highly encourage everyone to visit his site to read up on his work.
