Photographer João Pina is originally from Lisbon, Portugal. Pina’s work has been published in The New York Times, Newsweek, GEO Magazine, D Magazine, Days Japan, and Visão to name just a few.
Currently Pina is based in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he continues to document the remnants of a military operation named Operation Condor aimed at destroying the political opposition to the military dictatorships in South America during the 1970s.
With a population of nearly 10 million people, Rio De Janerio, Brazil remains to be one of the most violent cities in the world. João Pina implanted himself in the heart of city to document this extreme violence having the rare and unique opportunity to follow the military police units, as well as the opposing young men, the leaders and bosses of their communities, who traffic drugs in the “favelas”.
