Canadian artist Mathieu St-Pierre uses traditional analog video signals produced by various computer programs to create his visual works utilizing visual imperfections and corrupted files to paint his “digital canvas.”

“The images not only document the fragility of those virtual data, they are often capable of triggering memories and associations from real world life experience. We are consequently faced with electronic malfunctions in the realm of pixels versus the perfect imagery.”

“Nowadays I use a lot of pornographic videos that I download from the internet since they usually have a very good visual rendering quality and I don’t have to worry about the final size of my prints. Also, adult videos are easier to glitch and corrupt, so this is where I start… let’s say that it’s my canvas. From there I try to force other errors and imperfections in my work by overlapping the video files in a video editing program and I sometimes add filters to exaggerate some details or to simply play with the colors. Finally, all my images come from video files as opposed to some artists who will work with only one single image that they will shape and create with photoshop. I prefer to have a lot of material to be able to single out ONE image from a video that will be the perfect frame in a body of work.”
