art blog - Matthew Reamer - empty kingdom

So after taking a hiatus from my normal EK posting schedule for a little over two weeks, it feels good to be back once again (The truth is that I broke the EK fax machine, and the powers that be sent me to solitary confinement in the basement of our office, stuffed inside a 5’x5′ cage hanging from the ceiling, only being fed food scraps from whatever that was collected off of our EK kitchen floor)…help me.

Thankfully however, EK gave me a laptop to continue my indentured author-slave work during my imprisonment (which is not a surprise), and lucky enough, I was able to compile some dope and intriguing artists! Photographer Matthew Reamer travels into the underrepresented and harsh neighborhoods of Oakland, California, USA to document the infamous Scraper Bikes.

In Reamer’s series, the resourcefulness and creativity of low-income youth of color are captured as they transform normal bikes into rideable works of art out of anything and everything that is available to these underrepresented, often misjudged, and misunderstood youth.
