Mr. Sauli at LIAISON Amsterdam

If you ask all of us in EK office as a group if we like movies…chances are someone might just throw a chair at you because we’re psychotic about movies. Well, Mr. Sauli takes some of our favorite and most classic motion pictures (in this case, 2001: A Space Odessy, No Country for Old Men, and Amelie) and transforms them into a different visual art. By now, I’m sure you know by the heading that Mr. Sauli will be exhibiting his insane Mimetrics pieces for the dopest of the dope show, LIAISON Amsterdam!

So the breakdown of Mr. Sauli’s Mimetrics project go something like this:

“Mimetrics is an exploration of the structure and techniques of visual narratives, with a current focus as to how these are applied in films. It aims to explore this in new and interesting ways. It uses open-source tools such as ffmpeg and mencoder to generate a stream of still images from a digital movie file, typically at a rate of 1 frame per second. Along with the films, the freely available subtitle files of the film are loaded, providing a good indication of the visuals and dialogue of a film.

It does not render films as a linear playback, but as a simultaneous view and moving image mapping of the entire film. This way, the visual language of cinema – narratives of color, texture, image versus dialogue – becomes visible to every viewer. It is a dive into the alternate realities created by cinema that previews or written summaries cannot grasp.”

(Mimetrics further explained if you want to read more on Mr. Sauli’s website!)

In all honesty, the images shown here DOES NOT do justice to his work! If you go to his website, you can view his work at hi-res, which is pretty crazy (and a pretty large image). To really appreciate his work and to get the full effect, seeing his work in person is the way to go! Get your butt to Amsterdam for the show!
