I think it’s safe to say (I’m definitely not shy to admit) that underwater photography blew up really quickly in a short period of time. That’s not to say that it’s not cool anymore, or that there isn’t a good amount of skill involved in shooting underwater, but for the most part, many photographers definitely go for that “aesthetically-beautiful-wonderfully-abstract” direction. Enter photographer Sarah Lee from Kailua Kona, Hawaii from stage-left to bring underwater photography back to it’s natural context showing man’s connection with the ocean. Ah-maz-ing…like 30-images-in-this-post amazing. Enjoy summer, enjoy good company, enjoy the ocean.

Lee’s work is visually compelling, and simply gorgeous as she gets right into the ocean with her surfer and swimmer subjects alike to capture them in the natural ocean setting. It’s not a pool, no fresh water stream in the middle of the woods, it’s not a small river out in the boonies, no whimsical and flowly clothes dressing her subjects…it’s the fuckin’ ocean baby. It’s pretty apparent that Lee loves the ocean and the surfer life…I’m pretty damn envious (or just damn jealous) simply because her work makes me yearn to dive into the ocean, but the only problem is…I don’t know how to swim. I never learned.

Lee captures the raw power and majestic beauty of ocean waves, being in the right moment and the right time to shoot her subjects as they swim and surf in the deep blue. Lee has relocated from Hawaii to Byron Bay, Australia chasing the next big wave of her life…
