Husmann/Tschaeni

Husmann Tschaeni0
A Husmann/Tschaeni artwork stares you in the face. Under the layers of pinks, greens and blues, you sense movement. As if it is watching your back. Suddenly, you feel yourself being drawn into the art, losing focus. "We work backwards ..." greets you as you enter the gates. A small plaque reads: "A hell of positive energy with a small hint of hidden otherworldly darkness mixed with visual poetry and deep sensitive natural beauty. A daily biological presence combined with absurd undefined monstrous fantasy." Whatever it means, you feel impelled to move into this otherworldly place.

by

EK_Raphael Vicenzi_SB
We featured Raphaël Vicenze back in 2010 and interviewed him in 2012 so it's been a while since we saw anything from him. We thought it would be a great time to get in touch with him and see what he had going on. His work pops off the page, more a parade of images than a series of paintings. He's agreed to participate in our Sketchbook series so without further ado we present a look behind the scenes at his work!

Charles Wilkin0
"My work is a loose collection of thoughts and observations in many ways and less about one specific theme. I see it as being a reflection of the world we live in, with all its ugliness and cruelty. But from that, I strive to extract the beauty and empathy hidden underneath and within us all, revealing the unknown, the unspoken and intangible things that make us truly human." -Charles Wilkin, Brooklyn, NY

Ernesto Artillo - Empty Kingdom - 2015
Working primarily in Fashion, Ernesto Artillo is an editorial collagist, as I would like to call him. He transforms high fashion into fractured, distorted portraits, using photography and collage. His work varies from obscure, minimalist collage to more dizzying and surreal landscapes (at times echoing Cubism) with the human body being cut by bold stripes of color and abstract imagery. He has worked with the biggest names in fashion from Louis Vuitton to Burberry to Maison Martin Margiela.

Eugenia Loli

Eugenia Loli0
"It's important for me to "say" something with my artwork, so for the vast majority of my work there's a meaning behind them. I usually do this via presenting a "narrative" scene in my collages, like there's something bigger going on than what's merely depicted. Sometimes the scene is witty or sarcastic, some times it's horrific with a sense of danger or urgency, some times it's chill. I leave it to the viewer's imagination to fill-in the blanks of the story plot." -Eugenia Loli, collage artist, Milpitas, California.

John Stezaker - Empty Kingdom - Art Blog
London based artist John Stezaker’s work re-examines the various relationships to the photographic image: as documentation of truth, purveyor of memory, and symbol of modern culture. In his collages, Stezaker appropriates images found in books, magazines, and postcards and uses them as ‘readymades’. Through his elegant juxtapositions, Stezaker adopts the content and contexts of the original images to convey his own witty and poignant meanings.

Art Blog - Seth Clark - Empty Kingdom
Designer and artist Seth Clark creates beautiful collages focusing on the beauty of decay and collapse within architecture. Within the deterioration, he writes, "there remains a gentle resolve...it is as if the buildings were content with their circumstance...They are on the brink of ruin, yet appear dignified in their state. Something very energized and present is trying to escape out of a slow history of abandonment." His pieces are quite painterly, with subdued hues and an attention to detail that borders on realism, he has created works of structures that do not exist, yet are entirely familiar.

London based artist John Leigh aka Karborn creates strange and complex collages that are both terrestrial and celestial. Working with various mediums, his pieces are surreal yet maintain a delicate balance between order and chaos. Cut figures and forms float in spaces that are akin to an exploding supernova.
