Swiss Army Man, the debut feature film of the talented duo the Daniels (Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan) won the Sundance directing award and after viewing it, it is obvious why. The film is incredibly original, funny, charming, and heartfelt in so many ways. If you enjoy(ed) the trailer then you will be delighted and pleased to find out the film is what you might expect and more.. you will laugh, you might cry, and throughout the entire film you will be on the edge of your seat wondering what wonderfully gross and hilarious twists and turns are in store for you next.

According to him there are 17 stages in which every hero has to walk through one way or the other.

Tatiana Plakhova - Empty Kingdom - Art Blog
"The main idea is to show a new way of “infographic” drawings. Because everything we see is biological, mathematical or geological information. It can also be cultural patterns or any other thing. Complexity Graphics works are based on mathematical simplicity and harmony. I would describe them as infographic abstracts. This mathematical style helps me to illustrate everything from biological cell to the space and meditative worlds. That’s why I admire by math, because it’s everywhere and nowhere." -Tatiana Plakhova, Moscow, Russia

EMPTY KINGDOM TOP 100 Artists of 2013

TOP 100 2013
[Photo by: Shelbie Dimond] 939 is the magic number for EK in 2013. 939 only has 4 factors: 1, 3, 313, 939...which doesn't really have any significant meaning relating to our TOP 100. AMD made a CPU called the Socket 939 back in June 2004...but we're not sponsored by them nor any other computer tech company to supply us with the machines that we need to run EK. The year 939 in Roman numerals is CMXXXIX...which doesn't mean crap since none of us use Roman numerals anymore. According to HistoryOrb.com, 4 major events took place in year 939 that were documented: July 8th (The Major Occultation, or Ghaybat el-Kubra of Muhammad al-Mahdi), August 6th (Battle at Simancas - Spain beats Moors), October 2nd (Battle at Andernach: King Otto & Hermann of Zwaben beat Eberhard of France & Giselbert of Lutherans), October 27th (Edmund I succeeds Athelstan as King of England)...which all has nothing to do with EK. Nonetheless, 939 is the exact number of posts we had to sift through for 2013 in order to bring to all of you art-fiends our fourth annual EMPTY KINGDOM TOP 100 Artists of 2013!

To all the devote, unknowing and loose followers of my posts... I sincerely apologise for keeping you waiting with my articles. It has saddened me up to now; not being in a position to find and post the artwork that I cherish, but from now on, I should be posting regularly again (and I love you all and would never desert you).

Josh Sinn is a photographer from Ellicott City, Maryland whose photos sometimes make me think I'm seeing a shot from Mulholland Drive. Mainly taken from his "Fogged Up" series, these photos make normal scenes appear as though they were staged, creating a slight eerie feel to them. He's also selling prints of some of the images featured in this post. Check out the prints he has for sale here.

Titian’s Metamorphosis

by

March 11, 2013

titian_web12
As any of you lovely London souls will know, Summer 2012 was not only about the olympics but also an incredible feat of artistic exhibitionism. Titian's Metamorphosis was unquestionably one of wrenchingly best. A stunning collaboration between contemporary artists and The Royal Ballet that centered around the powerful theme of metaporphosis in three of Titian's paintings, on show for the first time in centuries. Although we can't bring the ballet itself to your doorstep, below is one gorgeous facet - the film of the re-imagined Diana myth. Chilling, and sublime.

Emrah Gonulkirmaz was mentioned on EK last June for the work he contributed to the short collaborative experimental, Parasite Choi. Emrah is a designer and director based in Los Angeles whose work focuses heavily on form. At times he manipulates the form of an object beyond obvious recognition, and other times he narrows the field of view to the point where the form of an object is only hinted at through its essential details.
