Ernesto Artillo

Ernesto Artillo - Empty Kingdom - 2015
Working primarily in Fashion, Ernesto Artillo is an editorial collagist, as I would like to call him. He transforms high fashion into fractured, distorted portraits, using photography and collage. His work varies from obscure, minimalist collage to more dizzying and surreal landscapes (at times echoing Cubism) with the human body being cut by bold stripes of color and abstract imagery. He has worked with the biggest names in fashion from Louis Vuitton to Burberry to Maison Martin Margiela.

Based out of San Francisco, California, Serge draws his inspiration from his surroundings, his Haitian background, and the coastal cities he grew up in.

EMPTY KINGDOM TOP 100 Artists of 2013

TOP 100 2013
[Photo by: Shelbie Dimond] 939 is the magic number for EK in 2013. 939 only has 4 factors: 1, 3, 313, 939...which doesn't really have any significant meaning relating to our TOP 100. AMD made a CPU called the Socket 939 back in June 2004...but we're not sponsored by them nor any other computer tech company to supply us with the machines that we need to run EK. The year 939 in Roman numerals is CMXXXIX...which doesn't mean crap since none of us use Roman numerals anymore. According to HistoryOrb.com, 4 major events took place in year 939 that were documented: July 8th (The Major Occultation, or Ghaybat el-Kubra of Muhammad al-Mahdi), August 6th (Battle at Simancas - Spain beats Moors), October 2nd (Battle at Andernach: King Otto & Hermann of Zwaben beat Eberhard of France & Giselbert of Lutherans), October 27th (Edmund I succeeds Athelstan as King of England)...which all has nothing to do with EK. Nonetheless, 939 is the exact number of posts we had to sift through for 2013 in order to bring to all of you art-fiends our fourth annual EMPTY KINGDOM TOP 100 Artists of 2013!

Apollonia Saintclair’s Ink [NSFW]

by

March 28, 2013

The one thing that I love about working for EK is that once in a while, I'll come across an artist who just creates art for the sake of art without taking themselves or their work too seriously (not to diminish their passion or body of work at all). Apollonia Saintclair creates unadulterated illustrations of adult nature without being shy about anything. You have to love that kind of free fun an artist is willing to run with.

[Photo by: Lauren Treece] The beginning is, in fact, finally here. After shifting through exactly 1470 posts for the entire 2012 calendar year, a dozen pots of coffee made, several holes punched in the drywall during heated deliberations, and several concussions suffered from office supplies hurled at each others' heads, we proudly present the third annual EMPTY KINGDOM TOP 100 Artists of 2012!

Paintings of Taner Ceylan

by

November 23, 2012

Header
I don't usually look for hyper-realistic painters, but in the case of Taner Ceylan, I really couldn't resist. I'm a fan of everything this artist is about. On the surface, He has a range of mildly tame, but still scarily accurate portraits... until you journey deeper into the heart of his work, and you see where his true interests and fascinations lie. Be warned – it will shock you.

Having only been in the game since 2008, Cryptik's street art has evolved into a full-blown crusade. He calls it the "Cryptik Movement". What began as an outlet to share his thoughts and beliefs, has become a public diary of his personal spiritual journey.

Marjolein Caljouw

by

Marjolein Caljouw is a full-time illustrator and artist hailing from the Netherlands, who is able to produce some beautifully empyreal drawings and paintings. Her use of paleness in juxtaposition with the warming pastel colours drew me into her work, which is usually the very same sort of quality that deters me, seeing as I'm very often and quite easily drawn to dark pieces of art, but maybe because I adore such beautiful depictions of the female form, and Marjolein's work provides a sustenance for that adoration, I can bear, and even marvel at the colour choices she makes.

Koralie les dames d’abord

art blog - Koralie - empty kingdom
Ever since I saw  Koralie and husband Supakitch on EK on November of last year, I've been wanting to do a post about them individually, so here goes! Though their work blends incredibly in a fluke of genius brought by street art super powers, Koralie's work stands alone with pure individual style. Her signature "doll" illustrations appear throughout her work, she blends a variety of different patterns, textures and various cultural influences that make each piece an intricate evolution from the last.

David Marsh is a British graphic designer that creates pantone-constructed series of classic album covers consisting of swatch grids developed through Adobe Illustrator. "The purpose of this series is my own exploration and development along with the satisfaction I have when I complete an image I like to experiment with image creation and will stumble onto a technique and develop that and then archive it and resurrect it when I have a  purpose for it. I will develop this idea into various new directions, the next being actually painting some of the covers that work best, hopefully on a very large scale or using collage to create the image. the options are endless and that excites me." -David Marsh

Mr. Ian Wright creates pixel-based artwork using all kinds of different materials. Ian is motivated by trying to push his work somewhere new. He prefers to let the materials used to influence the outcome of his artwork. I believe he is from the UK. But what do I know, I'm not a journalist, and I'm just a bunny.
